police stations set on fire as nine people killed in unrest

Image
Protesters in Iran set fire to police stations and vehicles across the country on Thursday as the death toll from unrest triggered by the death of a young woman detained by security forces rose to nine. The protests, led mostly by women, erupted in more than a dozen cities and at universities in Tehran following the death on Friday of Mahsa Amini, 22, who had been arrested three days earlier for allegedly breaking Iran’s strict hijab law. Amini, who was from Iran's western Kurdistan province, fell into a coma after being arrested by morality police in Tehran. For nearly a week, protesters have been chanting “death to the dictator” and burning their headscarves. In a video taken in the north-east and posted on social media, protesters shouted "we will die, we will die but we'll get Iran back" near a police station that was set on fire. The video, on Twitter account 1500tasvir, was reported by Reuters but could not be verified. The 1500tasvir account focuses on Iran pro...

Sethurathnam Ravi, Former BSE Chairman - “Goods And Services Tax Has Been a Major Reform Across India”

Image
From July 1, 2017, a uniform tax on goods and services - marketed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "One Nation, One Tax, One Market" - replaced a bewildering array of local sales and entry levies. After years of pulling in 1 trillion rupees ($13 billion) a month or less, GST collections nowadays are consistently 50% higher. The technology has stabilized. Uniform taxation across the country has gone a long way toward making India a common market, logistics and e-commerce have benefited and apart from checking evasion, real-time data on supply chains promises to help small firms access cheap financing. According to the former BSE Chairman, Sethurathanam Ravi  there were some obstacles on the road of GST until its successful acceptance. He says that the way was not easy for GST to get accepted by the people, but surely it was progressive and has finally seen the outcome. After a sluggish start and underwhelming tax collections, GST collections in the past two years have se...

Rosmah Mansor, wife of Malaysia’s former leader Najib Razak, convicted of corruption

Image
Rosmah Mansor, the wife of Malaysia’s ex-premier Najib Razak, was found guilty of graft Thursday, just over a week after her husband began serving a 12-year jail term. “The accused is found guilty of all three charges,” High Court Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan said as Rosmah sat quietly in the dock. The judge added that her defense was “bare denial and unsubstantiated.” The Kuala Lumpur court began mitigation on Thursday afternoon, ahead of sentencing. Even after that, Rosmah will not go straight to jail, pending what could be a lengthy appeals process. Prosecutors said Rosmah had sought a 187.5 million-ringgit ($41.8 million) bribe and received 6.5 million ringgit for helping a company secure a solar power project for rural schools in the Malaysian part of Borneo during her husband’s rule. She still faces 17 other charges involving tax evasion and money laundering. The 70-year-old has long been reviled by Malaysians for her reportedly vast collection of designer handbags, clothing and je...

Snap cutting 20 percent of staff as ad sales continue to dry up

Image
The parent company of social media platform Snapchat said Wednesday that it is letting go of 20 percent of its staff as it reorganizes and tries to reduce costs in the face of declining ad sales. In a letter to staff posted on Snap Inc.’s website, CEO Evan Spiegel said sales were not keeping up with earlier projections. “Unfortunately, given our current lower rate of revenue growth, it has become clear that we must reduce our cost structure to avoid incurring significant ongoing losses,” Spiegel wrote. Spiegel said Snap was restructuring its business to focus on community growth, revenue growth and augmented reality. Anything that doesn’t contribute to those three areas “will be discontinued or receive substantially reduced investment,” Spiegel said. Last fall, Snap said its ad sales were being hurt by a privacy crackdown that rolled out on Apple’s iPhones, which raised investor fears about the app’s potential for growth. Most social media platforms rely heavily on advertising revenue,...

Vegetable prices soar as flood-hit Pakistan faces food crisis

Image
Fruit and vegetable prices have shot up across Pakistan after flooding destroyed crops and disrupted supplies. Flash floods have washed away roads, buildings and bridges, killing at least 1,100 people so far in the country’s worst flooding in three decades. Damage to homes and infrastructure could cost more than $10 billion, the country's planning minister said on Monday. Losses to the country's key farming sector have yet to be fully assessed. In the eastern city of Lahore, close to the border with India and far from the worst floods in Sindh province, the prices of some vegetables have tripled. The Pakistani government sets prices for some fresh produce — but traders often ignore them. “Last week, I sold onions for 90 rupees a kilogram and today the government price is 300 per kg,” said vegetable seller Ahmad Ali.
