Joint center for Ukraine grain exports opens in Istanbul

Image
Turkey on Wednesday formally opened a joint coordination center for Ukrainian grain exports under a UN-backed deal aimed at resuming shipments for the first time since Russia’s February invasion of its neighbor. Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar unveiled the center at a ceremony held five days after Moscow and Kyiv put their names on a deal designed to deliver wheat and other grain across the Black Sea from three designated Ukrainian ports. The center will be staffed by civilian and military officials from the two warring parties and delegates from Turkey and the UN. Their primary assignment involves monitoring the safe passage of Ukrainian grain ships along established routes and overseeing their inspection for banned weapons on the way into and out of the Black Sea. How can the world halt the spread of monkeypox?

Image
As the world grapples with the monkeypox outbreak, countries with flare-ups of the viral disease have been offering vaccination to contacts of infected people and those in groups considered as being at risk. At the weekend, the World Health Organisation declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, the first since Covid-19. For most people, symptoms such as rashes on the face, palms and other parts of the body, and a fever, are not serious, although individuals with a weakened immune system, pregnant women and children may be more at risk and the disease can prove fatal. With cases having exceeded 18,000 across 75 countries this year, concerns have been raised about whether will it be possible to control the spread of a disease that, until recently, was largely confined to west and central Africa, with occasional, typically short-lived appearances elsewhere. Figures compiled by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention show that America has recorded ...

Taiwan practices repelling Chinese sea invasion in war games

Image
Taiwan simulated intercepting Chinese attacks from the sea in annual war games on Tuesday, with President Tsai Ing-wen hailing the military’s “determination” as she watched from onboard a destroyer. Democratic Taiwan lives under constant threat of being invaded by China, which views the self-ruled island as part of its territory to be seized by force if necessary. On the second day of the island’s largest annual war drills, Tsai, dressed in military fatigues, boarded the Kee Lung class destroyer to supervise a live-fire drill off Taiwan’s eastern coast. Fighter jets and warships set off various types of missiles aimed at intercepting “a group of enemy ships,” the military said. Anti-submarine rockets and depth bombs were also discharged and a Dutch-built Sword Dragon class submarine practiced an emergency ascent, it added. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said the Kingdom plans for the Saudi stock exchange to be larger than many global peers as he expects NEOM to sell shares to the public in 2024, adding nearly SR1 trillion ($266 billion) to the market. Speaking to reporters after unveiling the designs of The Line, the city in NEOM, the Crown Prince further noted that the NEOM will add more than SR5 trillion to the stock exchange in later stages as more parts of the project will be completed.  The Crown Prince also added that all companies owned by the Public Investment Fund will be listed on the stock market in the future, which will help it become one of the top three largest stock markets on the planet.  Talking about the funding plans for NEOM, the Crown Prince said that in 2027 the SR500 billion capital for the project will be collected — with SR200-300 billion of that coming from the services that will be created in the first phase. Another SR200-300 billion will be gathered from the...

Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss trade economic blows in first head-to-head TV debate

Image
Rishi Sunak pipped Liz Truss in the first direct TV debate of the Conservative Party leadership race in a series of fired-up clashes, according to a snap poll issued minutes later. The poll by Opinium, based on a sample of 1,032 voters, found 39 per cent believed Mr Sunak had performed best compared to 38 per cent for Ms Truss. The pair sought to land knock out blows in criticism of each other's economic plans during the hour-long TV appearance in the pottery town of Stoke: Mr Sunak hammered the point there was “nothing Conservative” about Ms Truss’s approach and it would give the party “absolutely no chance” of winning the next election. Ms Truss, the Foreign Secretary, suggested her rival would lead the country into a recession. Sethurathnam Ravi shares his views about the journey of GST in India as it completes five years since introduction. According to Mr. Ravi, when the GST was introduced 5 years ago there were a lot of misgivings about how the centre and state governments will work together regarding the tax collection and how the distribution will work. In Sethurathnam Ravi’s opinion, compounded with this issue was the platform issue. At the time of the introduction of the GST, there was also the interpretation and the awareness issue from the SSE and it had also created a lot of confusion in that, he says. Sethurathnam Ravi BSE S Ravi also explains the other obstacles that were on the road of GST until its successful acceptance. He says that the w...

UK temperatures hit record 40ºC as fires spread across the country

Image
Britain was counting the cost of the hottest day in its history on Wednesday after fires destroyed dozens of buildings in unprecedented 40ºC weather. London Mayor Sadiq Khan said Tuesday was the fire brigade's busiest day since the Second World War as the extreme heat and bone-dry grass set homes and warehouses ablaze. There were 16 firefighters injured and 41 properties destroyed in London as firefighters struggled to respond to 2,600 calls and major fires that needed 10 or more fire engines to douse them, Mr Khan told Sky News. Dramatic footage showed smoke and flames erupting around the country as temperatures hit a peak of 40.3ºC in Coningsby, Lincolnshire. The previous record of 38.7ºC was beaten in 34 places and equalled in another five. Six sites, mostly in Greater London, had temperatures reach or exceed 40ºC. Scotland experienced its hottest day on record, with the temperature reaching 34.8ºC in Charterhall in the Scottish Borders, Met Office provisional figures showed. RE...

There will be at least one television debate, which the BBC is hosting on Monday night, despite the two previous debates resulting in “blue-on-blue” with the candidates criticising each other. Egypt’s LNG exports to Europe receive boost amid gas crisis

Image
Egypt is beefing up its liquefied natural gas exports to Europe, paving the way to becoming a regional energy centre, as the continent's biggest gas supplier, Russia, disrupts supply. In the first six months of this year, more than 72 per cent of Egypt’s LNG exports went to Europe, compared with 29 per cent in all of last year, Refinitiv LNG flows data shows. Although the North African country has limited natural gas itself, paling in comparison to the US, the world's top producer, or Russia in second place, it has built a role through agreements with partners and its strategic geographic location. The US produced 934.2 billion cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas last year, about 23 per cent of the world’s total, while Russia produced 701.7 bcm and Egypt produced 67.8 bcm, according to the latest BP Statistical Review of World Energy. “Egypt is not going to make up for all the Russian volumes,” Olumide Ajayi, senior LNG analyst at Refinitiv, told The National . Pakistan says forces kill 9 insurgents after officer’s death

Image
Pakistani forces backed by helicopters killed at least nine separatists after the outlawed group abducted and executed an army officer, government and security officials said Friday. The military and local authorities confirmed Thursday that up to 15 insurgents disguised as police killed Col. Laeeq Mirza after abducting him Tuesday when he was traveling with his family from the town of Ziarat, 100 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan. The military did not share any updates about the operation on Friday. Mirza had been was heading to a tourist resort when members of the outlawed Baluchistan Liberation Army (BLA), designated a “terrorist” group by the United States in 2019, halted his vehicle on a highway and seized him. The group later claimed that it executed Mirza — but let his family members live because they were not involved in crimes against the group. Local government officials confirmed that the attackers freed the colonel’s family members. Read ...

India reports first case of monkey-pox

India has reported its first confirmed case of monkeypox after a 35-year-old man with a history of travel to the Middle East showed symptoms, officials said. The federal government rushed a multi-disciplinary team to the southern state of Kerala in view of the confirmed case of monkeypox there, according to an official statement. The man, who traveled from the United Arab Emirates to Kerala on Tuesday, was in stable condition and isolated at a hospital, the state’s health minister Veena George told reporters Thursday. “He is stable and all his vital signs are normal. Heathrow baggage issues, cancellations and delays - the soaring numbers

Image
After imposing a daily passenger cap departing from its terminals, the kindest thing to say about Heathrow Airport right now is that it is in crisis mode. Flights are being cancelled with startling regularity, delays are the norm and baggage piles are mounting. The pandemonium is somewhat ironic given it has been caused by the travel resurgence airport chiefs spent most of the last two and a half years dreaming of. Ever since UK Covid travel rules were imposed, industry honchos pled with the government to reduce restrictions significantly or remove them entirely, while simultaneously encouraging travellers to get airborne again. Their wish granted, passenger numbers in June this year reached 5,990,385, a level comparable to that seen before March 2019. Morocco firefighters battle infernos as villagers flee

Image
Hundreds of Moroccan firefighters and soldiers battled late Thursday to put out at least four infernos ripping through forests in the north of the kingdom, officials said. The fires, fanned by strong winds in the four areas, have not resulted in any casualties so far, but nearly 500 families were evacuated “as a precaution” in the provinces of Larache and Taza, according to official statements. Several villages that were evacuated also saw military planes dropping loads of water to extinguish fires tearing across the dry terrain, an AFP journalist said. Shocked by how fast the flames were spreading, residents fled their homes, with some families herding their cattle and horses — upon which their livelihoods depend — ahead of them. “I was with my family, and at one point, we heard people shouting, ‘Fire! Fire!’” said Samir Boundad, from Larache. “We ran out to flee and fortunately, thanks to God, the fire moved up the mountain.” A village in the Ksar El Kebir region was destroyed by the...

China’s economy expands at slowest pace since 2020

Image
China’s economy grew at the slowest pace since the initial coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, a reflection of the damage the nation’s zero-Covid approach has had on growth and the challenge Beijing faces in meeting its full-year target. Gross domestic product increased 0.4 per cent from a year earlier, the worst performance since the first quarter of 2020, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Friday. Growth was far weaker than the 1.2 per cent gain in a Bloomberg survey of economists. On a quarterly basis, the economy contracted 2.6 per cent. China’s economy is paying the price for Beijing’s attempt to stamp out Covid cases, a strategy that’s becoming evermore difficult as more infectious virus variants emerge. On top of that, the property market remains in a deep slump. Economists say the government’s ambitious growth goal of about 5.5 per cent is out of reach, with GDP forecast to expand slightly more than 4 per cent this year. “The downward pressure on the economy has increased sig...
